DUBAI // Delegates at the opening of the World Green Economy Summit on Tuesday were prompted to act urgently to limit climate change.

The call was made by Adnan Amin, director general of the UAE-based International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena).

He reminded the audience of a recent report issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

“The latest report by the IPCC reconfirms that averting catastrophic climate change is possible if we act now. But we need to act decisively. Renewable energy, in combination with energy efficiency, provides the most affordable and technologically mature path to bring about the necessary change,” said Mr Amin.

“The accelerated deployment of renewable energy significantly reduces energy-related carbon dioxide emissions at a reasonable cost, and also provides other benefits, including enhanced energy security, more local jobs and value-creation, and a cleaner and healthier environment,” he said.

The two-day summit was opened by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.

It was organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and was running alongside the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition, also organised by the authority.
