DUBAI // The Dubai Fishermen Co-operative Association (DFCA) has warned fishermen against entering the territorial waters of neighbouring countries.

The warning comes after eight Emiratis, and their boats, were detained at Iran’s port of Kish two weeks ago. The Emiratis were ordered on Monday to pay fines.

Major General Mohammed Al Marri, chairman of DFCA, told Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, he was determined to organise awareness campaigns among fishermen.

He said the risks associated with approaching territorial waters of neighbouring countries include legal accountability, as well as the effect it has on the UAE’s image.
