50 per cent of camels deaths caused by litter in UAE
Fifty per cent of camel deaths nationally are caused by suffocation due to eating plastic bags, according to the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi (EAD).
The agency said it was crucial that the public take care of the environment and refrain from tossing waste in desert parks and camping areas. Such behaviour harms nature and its beauty, it said, and causes bad smells to spread. Desert-goers were also urged to abide by Abu Dhabi hunting regulations.
The number of camel deaths yearly was not specified.
Mohammed Al Raissi, director of communication and community service at the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, said his agency was conducting an awareness on proper ways to store and transport food in the desert. ADFCA inspectors are visiting people in the field to urge them to adopt environment-friendly habits and hand them brochures.
