ABU DHABI // A new literary competition aimed at aspiring Emirati writers was launched yesterday.
Organised by Twofour54, the Emirates Novel Awards is intended to unearth the next generation of local writers, with winning works published.
Supported by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, the Foreign Minister and National Media Council chairman, the competition was launched at Twofour54 in the capital.
"This is our first real effort in supporting novel writing in the UAE," said Noura Al Kaabi, the Twofour54 chief executive.
"The Emirates Novel Awards will introduce the work of Emirati writers to a growing audience, while encouraging others to contribute to the UAE's literary history."
Open to published and unpublished Emiratis of any age, the competition holds three categories: Best Novel (minimum 40,000 words), Best Short Novel (17,000 to 40,000 words) and Special Writer.
Those interested have until the first week of September to submit entries. The following stage will see a judging panel choose the three finalist for the Best Novel and Best Short Novel categories respectively.
Shortlisted authors in both categories will have their work published as part of the Sharjah International Book Fair, in November. The shortlisted novels will be announced online, although no date has been given.
Readers will then nominate their favourite works with their recommendations forming 50 per cent of the vote, alongside the judging panel.
The top three entries from both categories will be announced in a ceremony held later in the year. The Special Writers Award will be chosen by the judging panel.
Although details of the prize are yet to be confirmed, Emirates Novel Awards secretary general Jamal Al Shehhi said it would include cash and foreign translations.
Mr Al Shehhi said: "Initiatives such as this underpin Abu Dhabi's commitment towards preserving and raising awareness of the UAE's rich culture through literary projects," he said.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
- Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
- Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
- Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
- Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
- Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
- Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.

Strait of Hormuz
Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.
The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.
Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait, a move that would risk inviting geopolitical and economic turmoil.
Last month, Iran issued a new warning that it would block the strait, if it was prevented from using the waterway following a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major Iranian oil importers.
A little about CVRL
Founded in 1985 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) is a government diagnostic centre that provides testing and research facilities to the UAE and neighbouring countries.
One of its main goals is to provide permanent treatment solutions for veterinary related diseases.
