ABU DHABI // Six young Emirati women injured in a road accident in Al Ain on Saturday were going to an education course.

Another woman died in the crash, when their bus collided with a lorry.

Dr Mugheer Al Khaili, director general of the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), and Salim Mohamed Al Dhaheri, executive director of school operations at Adec, visited them at Tawam hospital yesterday to check on their condition, reported the state news agency, Wam.

The students, aged between 17 and 20, all attended Al Duniya school in Al Ain.

They were on their way to the Common Educational Proficiency Assessment (Cepa) course when the crash happened in Al Arrad area.

The lorry was thought to have pulled out on to a main road without looking for oncoming traffic, causing the bus to hit it. The bus later caught fire.

It is believed the accident happened amid thick morning fog.

The bus driver, a Pakistani, was also injured.

Dr Al Khaili conveyed his deepest regret for the "painful" accident and expressed his sympathy for the deceased.

Salim Al Katheri, head of Adec's Al Ain office, visited the family of the 20-year-old who died to convey his condolences. Her body was taken to Al Wagan Hospital.

An investigation is under way.
