ABU DHABI // An 11-year-old Emirati schoolgirl took fifth place in an international letter writing competition that featured pupils from more than 14,000 schools in 65 countries.

Aliaa Ajil Al Ketbi, of Al Bat’ha School in Sharjah, was recognised at the Universal Post Union International Letter Writing Competition for the creativity expressed in her letter written in Arabic.

“An international jury praised the creativity with which you expressed yourself. I wish to thank you personally for sharing your vision of the world you wish to live in,” said Bishar A Hussein, UPU Director General.

This year’s theme ‘Tell us about the world you want to grow up in’ challenged students to express their hopes for the world and possible solutions to problems facing the planet in a letter.

Ibrahim bin Karam, chief commercial officer of Emirates Post Group, said his organisation was delighted that an Emirati had distinguished herself in the competition.

“Her winning letter shows that today’s generation has not lost the art of letter-writing. In today’s electronic age, it is great to see that young people are still writing handwritten letters and sending them by post,” he said.
