The roundabout in the Maydan V industrial area has been notorious for traffic congestion in Sharjah, causing long delays for motorists travelling from the Northern Emirates to Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

The contract to complete the third phase of the Emirates Road upgrade was awarded by a presidential committee. Wam did not mention to whom the contract had been awarded.

The project will also seek to solve other problems along this stretch of the road, such as the accumulation of storm water, which causes back-ups and flooded pedestrian subways in the winter months.

Dr Abdullah Al Nuaimi, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works, said last April that flooding would be a thing of the past after a network of storm sewers had been put in place.

The third phase of the project will focus on a stretch of Emirates Road at the start of the current intersection between Ajman and Sharjah, and will continue on the Emirates Road to the Sharjah-Dubai border.

The project was launched on the instructions of Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE.
