Egyptian businesswomen based in the UAE said that they are "surprised" and "shocked" at the comments made by Essam El Erian, the leading Muslim Brotherhood figure and vice chairman of Egypt's ruling Freedom and Justice Party, against the UAE.
"Those comments do not speak for the Egyptian people or for the members of our association or for our families, who live in the UAE, surrounded by the warm hospitality, fondness and affection of the brotherly Emirati people," the association of UAE-based Egyptian businesswomen said in a statement to Wam, the state news agency.
"The Egyptian-Emirati relations, solid as they are, cannot be affected by those views, just as much as the affectionate bonds between the Egyptian and Emirati peoples cannot be dented," the statement noted.
Throughout their history, Egypt and the UAE have stood side by side, supporting one another in every situation, the statement added.
"The Egyptian people always remember the affection and support of the late Sheikh Zayed for Egypt and for the continuation of close historical ties between the two nations and the two peoples.
"Every Egyptian living in the UAE feels that he or she are in their own country, at home amid friends and family."
