The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has warned students against falling for online adverts for fake universities.

Students have been urged to contact the ministry to ensure the university they apply to is accredited, Al Ittihad, the Arabic language sister paper of The National reported.

The warning follows a number of e-fraud cases reported to the ministry concerning a number of students, from across the GCC, who were allegedly scammed by a Pakistani company that claimed to offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees, PhDs and specialised courses from major American universities.

Counsellor Saif Al Mazroui, advisor to the ministry, said: “The process of obtaining degrees online is a global phenomenon, and the ministry’s role [is] to raise awareness and coordinate with competent authorities, particularly the Ministry of Interior, in view of protecting society from this dangerous phenomenon.”
