Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed, Ruler of Sharjah, has given his approval for work to commence at the American University of Sharjah on its first two doctoral programmes. The degrees are in business administration and engineering and are part of the school’s plans to become a leading research institution in the region. Sheikh Sultan made the announcement during the university’s Board of Trustees meeting held this week in Panama.

As chairman of the board, Sheikh Sultan reviewed and approved plans and fiscal parameters related to the 2015—2016 budget. The ruler said that the addition of new graduate programmes would be in synch with the direction and course expected of the university since its inception, with more emphasis on research.

“By enriching the academic offerings to include new specialities and doctoral programmes, we envisage encouraging research that will contribute to the UAE and the regional economic development,” said Dr Björn Kjerfve, AUS chancellor.
