ABU DHABI // Three ceremonies to honour Emirati students who took part in the UAE Youth Ambassadors cultural and language exchange programme have taken place.
The scheme, launched in 2012 under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, aims to help ambitious young Emiratis become leaders by improving their language skills.
The students learnt either German at the Goethe Institut, Korean at the King Sejong Institute, or Chinese at Confucius Institute, the latter two are at Zayed University.
Kwon Hae-Ryong, South Korean ambassador to the UAE, said the 10 students who learnt his language would be participating in internships at Korean companies this summer.
He said: “This will be a great opportunity for Emirati students to experience Korean culture and working.”
Earlier this month, Youth Ambassadors who completed a Chinese course were honoured in an event attended by Chang Hua, Chinese ambassador to the UAE.
He said: “We must work together to promote mutual understanding and strengthen partnerships between the two countries.”
Meanwhile, the students who had learnt German were recognised by ambassador Dr Eckhard Lübkemeier.
“In their own and unique way, the UAE Youth Ambassadors will create lasting personal bonds between our two countries,” he said.
So far, 158 young Emirati students have taken part in the programme, which is organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and participating embassies.
