When Nidhi Kumar first found out she scored five A* on her A-Levels, she felt relieved. But when her mother told her she was the top Gems scorer, she was speechless.
“It’s been in my head since June so you feel you can’t relax,” said the Cambridge High School student in Abu Dhabi. “I have no words to describe how I felt — it’s over and I did it the best possible way I could and now I can go to university in high spirits.”
The 19-year-old aced her exams in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and English literature. “I was hoping to get those grades and I’m really happy they came through,” she said. “I think I found last year more difficult.”
Ms Kumar plans on studying mathematics at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “I’m hoping to specialise in mathematical finance and quantitative analysis,” she said. “My family has always been into science — my mum was a science teacher and my dad an engineer — and I love science so it was a difficult call but I felt I would prefer a career in maths because I just love working with numbers.”
The Indian national, who has spent most of her life in Abu Dhabi, said her parents were thrilled. “My mum found out first because the school called her and she was screaming into the phone, I thought she was hyperventilating,” she said. “I loved all the subjects I took so I didn’t want to drop any and I wanted to hit the A’s with all of them so it’s kind of an unexpected bonus.”

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

Five famous companies founded by teens
There are numerous success stories of teen businesses that were created in college dorm rooms and other modest circumstances. Below are some of the most recognisable names in the industry:
- Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg and his friends started Facebook when he was a 19-year-old Harvard undergraduate.
- Dell: When Michael Dell was an undergraduate student at Texas University in 1984, he started upgrading computers for profit. He starting working full-time on his business when he was 19. Eventually, his company became the Dell Computer Corporation and then Dell Inc.
- Subway: Fred DeLuca opened the first Subway restaurant when he was 17. In 1965, Mr DeLuca needed extra money for college, so he decided to open his own business. Peter Buck, a family friend, lent him $1,000 and together, they opened Pete’s Super Submarines. A few years later, the company was rebranded and called Subway.
- Mashable: In 2005, Pete Cashmore created Mashable in Scotland when he was a teenager. The site was then a technology blog. Over the next few decades, Mr Cashmore has turned Mashable into a global media company.
- Oculus VR: Palmer Luckey founded Oculus VR in June 2012, when he was 19. In August that year, Oculus launched its Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $1 million in three days. Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion two years later.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
