FUJAIRAH // A campaign has been launched for residents to donate books, new or used, to the Young Men Social Foster Home in Fujairah.
Members of the public dropped off their books at the Fujairah City Centre mall at the weekend as part of the Al Bayt Mitwahid campaign’s Bright Start initiative.
The campaign invites people to donate books suitable for teenagers aged 14 to 17 to build the library of the foster home, according to Yousef Al Ghufli, a volunteer. The book donation drive ends this month.
Mr Al Ghufli said volunteers would help collect books at universities and institutions. They would also do so from their friends, neighbours and colleagues, as well as spreading word about the initiative, he said.
The campaign has nine initiatives to promote a culture of giving back to the community.
“We felt that there was no culture of civil responsibility and volunteering,” said Mr Al Ghufli.
“So we felt that there was a genuine need for social help. Therefore we took our first step and created the book drive event to develop the foster home’s library.”
Volunteers collected about 100 books at the weekend.
Halemh Abdullah, a student at Um Al Muminen School, said she became a volunteer after her sister informed her about the campaign. “I participated … to help them collect the books they need to achieve their mission and create the library,” she said.
Fatima Alkindi, a Khalifa University student, said the campaign was encouraging everyone to be part of the social activity.
“I knew about the initiative from university and got enrolled in it immediately because of its charitable purposes and to help those in need,” she said.
