ABU DHABI // Children between the ages of 9 and 12 were taught about spending and saving during a financial literacy workshop organised in the capital.

The Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development workshop was part of its Dirhami initiative, which aims to raise awareness among members of the public on financial matters.

Children learnt how to make wise financial decisions before saving, borrowing, investing or managing cash, during the workshop held in partnership with the Family Development Foundation.

Dr Salah El Halyan, an Emirati financial expert, told them during a lecture that their decisions should be based on knowledge and experience, reported state news agency Wam.

During the workshop, he demonstrated his expertise in personal financial planning and budgeting, and advised the attendees on how to manage their finances.

The council has organised four such workshops with the foundation last year, and five others for private and public-sector employees in the emirate. They were attended by 490 people.

The council and its partners said they will continue to raise community awareness on how to make wise financial decisions, and rational planning for spending and budgeting in both their personal and business lives.

Dirhami covers a wide range of financial literacy topics, such as financial management in everyday life as well as in business. Participants vary from students to newlyweds to families to business professionals.
