The fourth round of the UIM Skydive Dubai XCAT World Series is under way in Stresa, Italy this weekend.

Seven powerboat pilots taking part in the competition underwent the dunk test, standard procedure before races in which a pilot is strapped into a mock cockpit, which is then submerged and turned upside down in water. The pilot has to free himself and get to the surface safely.

The exercise is part of a safety test the pilots need to pass every 14 months to show they can rescue themselves from submerged craft in the event of an accident or emergency.

“The safety of our pilots is a major priority for us, and it’s important that they are kept on their toes in terms of rescue procedures,” said Sid Bensalah, secretary general of the World Professional Powerboating Association.

“The Bergamo Scuba Angels, under the leadership of Fabrizio Boffi, do a phenomenal job of maintaining the impeccable safety standards at all of our races, and the dunk test is just one step in this process.”

The first official practice for the 2014 Stresa GP took place on Friday, while the race for Emaar Pole Position will be contested on Saturday. The Dubai Duty Free Speed Cat Run will follow. The main event, the Stresa GP, will be held on Sunday.

Three UAE teams are competing in the XCAT World Series. They are the Victory Team, WPPA and the Spirit of Dubai team.
