DUBAI // A waitress had her five-year sentence for giving drugs to her friends at her birthday party upheld by the Court of Appeal on Wednesday.

Filipina ED, 35, invited three girlfriends and a male drug-dealer friend to her home to consume drugs including amphetamine and methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth.

The woman was found to have consumed both amphetamine and methamphetamine and her male compatriot, LF, 27, was convicted of possessing drugs, facilitating drug consumption for four women and with consuming drugs himself.

His five-year sentence was also upheld at the appeal court on Wednesday.

Both ED and LF confessed to the charges against them at the criminal court last February. In addition to the custodial sentence, both were fined Dh20,000 each and were told they would be deported after completing their sentences. These punishments were also upheld.

The pair were arrested on October 23 last year by Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department, who were acting on a tip-off.

Records show that the other three women were referred to Dubai Court of Misdemeanours on the charge of consuming a mind-altering substance, which, according to UAE law, is considered a misdemeanour, in contrast to consuming controlled drugs such as amphetamine and methamphetamine, which merit charges before the criminal court.

Records did not state what “mind-altering substance” referred to.
