Dubai taxi driver who returned Dh1.2m worth of diamonds and cash hailed by RTA

DUBAI // The honesty of a taxi driver who returned Dh1.2 million in lost diamonds and cash left behind by a forgetful customer has been praised by the Roads and Transport Authority.

Abdul Halim Mohammed Manu, a 31-year-old Bangladeshi, returned the property to its rightful owner after he found it in his taxi.

Mr Manu discovered the items after he finished his shift and was checking through the car.

It was reported that Dh200,000 in cash as well as diamonds and watches worth Dh1 million had been left in the boot of Mr Manu’s cab by a businessman he had picked up at Jumeirah Lakes Towers earlier in the day.

The driver, who has been working with Dubai Taxi Corporation for three years, travelled to Naif Police Station to hand the items over.

“Dubai Taxi Corporation recognises and appreciates our drivers and their level of honesty since we are part of the Roads and Transport Authority Government of Dubai and we take pride in encouraging this type of behaviour on all levels,” said a statement from Dubai Taxi Corporation.

Mr Manu was honoured personally by Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the RTA.

In September last year, a Pakistani cabbie, Omar Hayah Ajmal Khan, found 123,700 Saudi Riyals and gold jewellery in his car. He handed them over to officers at Al Qusais Police Station.

Libya's Gold

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.

The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.

Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
