Dubai's Extreme Car Park gets fast and furious

DUBAI // Julian Smith, stunt coordinator for the film Fast and the Furious 6, will be ripping the end of a Corvette Z06 around a car park in Dubai this evening.

The tyre-burning master is in town to wow petrolheads at the Extreme Car Park gathering. He'll be joined by stunt drivers Alex Hill (Nightscape) and Cord Newman (Dukes of Hazzard).

Smith has work to do before the Z06 is ready to take a spin on the tarmac, though. "It has the engine, it's got the power, it's got the roll cage ... but it doesn't have the set-up," he said.

The car will be fitted with smaller wheels, modifications will be made to its front and its steering column, and the drive train will be altered to give the car limited-slip differential. Or, to put it more simply, the car will be set up to make it easier to slide sideways across the tarmac.

Work to turn the 600bhp race car into a drifting machine began yesterday and Smith predicted a long night in the garage.

The owner of Garage D in London, spent 10 months on the set of the latest Fast and Furious movie. His role was to build or modify the cars for certain stunts and then test them out before Hollywood stuntmen clambered into the bucket seats to perform for the cameras.

Today, he'll take on the role of performer himself. "Basically I'll do a drift demo and then I'll combine with the two other drivers to do stunt scenes and car chase scenes. We're trying to outline some of the behind-the-scenes stuff that makes movies like Fast and Furious happen," he said.

Organised by Ematterz, the Extreme Car Park is described as a gathering of the Dubai's most extreme cars, as well as hundreds of modified rides including hotrods, drifters, racers and more

Entrance is free and doors at Studio City open at 4pm and close at 11pm.

Mane points for safe home colouring
  • Natural and grey hair takes colour differently than chemically treated hair
  • Taking hair from a dark to a light colour should involve a slow transition through warmer stages of colour
  • When choosing a colour (especially a lighter tone), allow for a natural lift of warmth
  • Most modern hair colours are technique-based, in that they require a confident hand and taught skills
  • If you decide to be brave and go for it, seek professional advice and use a semi-permanent colour
