Dubai prosecutors win longer sentence for rapist

DUBAI // A rapist will serve five years in jail instead of the three-year sentence given to him by the criminal court after prosecutors won an appeal.

The defendant, a 35-year-old Pakistani who admitted to rape and trepass in both courts, was in the country illegally.

On October 20, 2016, a Sri Lankan maid, 25, saw the man in the garden of her employer’s villa in Al Barsha 3. He told her he was replacing the gardener who had left the country.

“I believed him and left him to do his work. I headed to the kitchen but he followed me about five minutes later,” said the maid, adding that he locked the door and threw her to the floor. He then held her throat with one hand and undressed her with the other.

The maid resisted, forcing the man to eventually flee. She then told her sponsor who called the police. The defendant’s DNA was found on the woman’s body and he was arrested a few days later.

He will be deported on completion of his sentence.
