Many well-behaved drivers who have no traffic or Salik fines will receive gifts in February as part of a new "white points" initiative launched by Dubai Police's traffic department.
The scheme will grant drivers of vehicles registered in the city a point for each month they keep a clean sheet, but has been backdated to January last year, so the first drivers will be rewarded early this year.
Drivers who go 12 months without any fine will be eligible for prizes worth a minimum of Dh500 each.
Dubai Police said that this year there will be between 250 to 500 prizes and that if there are more people on the "white list" than there are prizes, preference will be given to those drivers who have gone the longest without a traffic violation.
Meanwhile, new-look patrol cars - similar in style to Dodge Chargers - are expected to arrive on the streets this year. The design upgrade was announced in September and although no specific launch date has been set all indications are that it will be this year.
Police will also continue the hunt for missing British seaman, Timmy MacColl, 28, from Gosport in Hampshire, who disappeared on May 27 while on shore leave in Dubai after his ship, HMS Westminster, docked at Port Rashid. Searchers are hoping for a breakthrough after the missing sailor's wife announced in December there would be a Dh1.5 million reward for anyone providing information that leads to him being found.
