DUBAI // Two policemen accused of forging official documents that claimed a traffic incident had taken place have been jailed.

Prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court that Emirati policeman S A, 30, had taken Dh2,000 from a member of the public in return for a false traffic report that he could use to claim from an insurance company. The member of the public turned out to be a police source.

The traffic officer is charged with seeking a bribe, forging official documents and using a forged official document, while fellow Emirati officer H H, 24, is charged with aiding and abetting, by knowing about the crime and failing to report it.

Records show that Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department received information about S A taking bribes in return for writing false traffic reports.

“We arranged with a police source and provided him with the money then he called the defendant and told him that his car had been in an accident but he would need a report to submit to the insurance company so they would repair his car,” testified F B, 37, a CID officer.

He added that on October 21 last year the source met with the two defendants while they were having dinner at their police patrol car. The source handed S A the money, after which S A was seen by sting operation members as he picked up his police book and wrote down the fake report.

As he signed the fake report, the arresting police officers swooped and took him and his colleague into custody.

“When we raided, S A threw the Dh2,000 [away] and stepped on them to hide them, by kicking them under the police car,” said the CID officer.

Both officers denied the charges against them but they were referred to prosecutors, who managed to retrieve a number of phone calls from SA’s phone in which he was discussing details of fake accidents and reports with people.

At Dubai Criminal Court, both defendants were sentenced to six months in jail and S A was also fined Dh2,000.
