DUBAI // Dubai Municipality is tightening restrictions on lifeguard accreditation at beaches and swimming pools.

The municipality has started to ban companies from issuing accreditation certificates for lifeguards without first obtaining permits from the Emirates International Accreditation Centre.

Redha Salman, director of the municipality’s health and safety department, made the announcement during a meeting on Thursday, reported Wam, the state news agency.

Fines can be levied against those who violate the provisions of the local order, which took effect at the beginning of this month, Mr Salman said.

The goal is to protect public safety by ensuring that lifeguards are qualified and accredited with the municipality, said Sultan Al Suwaidi, head of the department’s public safety section.
