An angry motorist who rammed the motorbike of an off-duty police captain before punching him and breaking his nose has been sentenced to three months in prison.
The accused, an Emirati inspector, 26, was driving his car down Al Safa road on December 30, 2017, when he thought the captain, who was on a motorbike, was staring at his female companion.
"The accused was upset and told me sarcastically to come sit with them inside the car. I explained that I was looking behind, keeping an eye on my friend who was also riding a motorbike, but is new to it," said the 32-year-old captain.
The assault happened at around 8.30pm at a traffic signal.
The accused rammed the bike with his car, knocking the driver over and then stepped out of his car and punched the biker in the face, breaking his nose.
"The bike fell on top of me and as I was trying to free myself. The accused then slapped me on my helmet, breaking it," said the captain.
He said he was in fact punched repeatedly, and passed out, waking up later in hospital.
A number of motorists, including a Canadian woman, said they witnessed the incident.
A medical report showed that the captain had been left with a permanent disability to the nose causing breathing difficulties.
Last March at Dubai Criminal Court, the man denied charges of physical assault that led to a permanent injury and damage of private property.
He was found guilty and sentenced to three months in prison.
