DUBAI // A maid who took illegal abortion pills to terminate her unborn baby conceived out of wedlock had her case referred to the misdemeanours court on Wednesday.
Prosecutors told the court that Filipina J A fell pregnant after sleeping with a compatriot, identified as J, who is currently on the run.
J A took several types of illegal abortion pills she bought from another Filipino, referred to as M, who is also on the run.
Court records said the woman was admitted to the intensive care unit in Latifa Hospital on January 21 suffering from bleeding and abdominal pain. She lost the child.
An examination revealed that her uterus was enlarged so staff carried out dilation and curettage procedures before she was transferred to the women’s ward.
She was discharged from hospital four days later but was required to return for ultrasound tests at the police clinic, which she failed to do.
At Dubai Criminal Court, JA admitted to having sex outside of wedlock and trying to carry out an illegal abortion.
J and M did not appear in court.
The court ruled that the case was out of its jurisdiction and referred the woman to the Court of Misdemeanours.
