DUBAI // A gang of five South Americans have been arrested on suspicion of stealing jewellery worth Dh6 million.

The three men and two women from Peru, Mexico and Argentina are alleged to have followed ZS, an Arab national, from his jewellery store in the Deira Gold Souk where he picked up the bag of gems.

Maj Gen Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, deputy chief of Dubai Police, said ZS, who was unaware he was being watched, drove to Deira City Centre mall and left the bag on the back seat of his car.

The gang smashed the car's rear window, snatched the bag of jewels and ran off.

The incident took place around 7.30pm on August 7.

Maj Gen Al Mazeina said ZS was asked by his brother to collect the jewels from their shop in the gold souk.

The five gang members were arrested and the jewels returned to their owner.
