DUBAI // Firefighters fought for more than five hours to extinguish a blaze that destroyed four warehouses this afternoon.
The fire in the Ras Al Khor Industrial Area started at about 1pm in a warehouse used to store perfumes. It quickly spread to the three other warehouses, which were also full of perfumes. All the warehouses were owned by Chemcrown International
More than a dozen fire engines rushed to the scene, and firefighters had to work hard to contain the blaze and prevent it from reaching a nearby carpentry workshop.
Police and rescue teams evacuated the neighbouring buildings and no injuries were reported.
Although the fire was brought under control within an hour, the flammable chemicals in the warehouses stretched the Civil Defence resources.
"The wind kept changing direction and every time we thought we had doused an area the wind breathed life back into the flames," said one fireman.
"We couldn't go very far into the warehouses as there was glass everywhere from the broken perfume bottles. The bottles were exploding from the intense heat."
The blaze finally looked like it would be out after almost four hours of continuous efforts to douse it with water and chemical foam, but the firemen ran into another obstacle – they almost ran out of water.
Extra water tankers had to be redeployed.
The cause of the fire is unknown and the Civil Defence has launched an investigation. Chemcrown International could not be reached for comment.
The blaze comes a week after a fire in Al Quoz 4 gutted a warehouse full of food products belonging to the supermarket next door.

- Mashable: In 2005, Pete Cashmore created Mashable in Scotland when he was a teenager. The site was then a technology blog. Over the next few decades, Mr Cashmore has turned Mashable into a global media company.
- Oculus VR: Palmer Luckey founded Oculus VR in June 2012, when he was 19. In August that year, Oculus launched its Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $1 million in three days. Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion two years later.

• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.
