Dubai Expo 2020: Leave your car and let the train take the strain

DUBAI // Visitors to the Dubai Expo 2020 would be discouraged from using their own cars to reach the expo site, the bid dossier reveals.

Instead they would be urged to use either an extension to the Metro Red Line or a zero-emission bus service called ExpoRider.

Only VIPs who have paid premium ticket prices would be able to use the shaded car parks next to the site.

Dedicated traffic lanes on the motorways leading to the site would be reserved for official expo vehicles, the ExpoRider buses and taxis.

"Supply of parking space will be limited to constrain demand," the dossier said. "No private cars will be allowed to enter the main drop-off area with the exception of those carrying people with impaired mobility."

Only approved zero-emission taxis would be allowed to drop off people close to the entrances.

Other taxis and private cars would be directed one of several a park-and-ride facilities at the edge of the site that would have unshaded spaces for 3,000 vehicles.

An on-site cable-car system would be able to carry up to 24,000 people an hour in its gondolas, each of which would accommodate up to 16 people.
