Dubai court jails cab driver who tried to rape passenger
DUBAI// A taxi driver found guilty of molesting and attempting to rape an American passenger in the back of his cab will be jailed for three months.
Afghan R A, 34, was convicted of sexually assaulting S P, a tourist, on the night of November 26, 2013.
The defendant denied the charge when he appeared in court in September this year.
Prosecutors said he took advantage of the late hour at which the woman got into his taxi. Records state he drove to a dark area in Al Gidaf, stopped the car and got into the rear where the victim was sitting.
The woman told prosecutors that the defendant entered the back of the cab, before she had time to lock the door, where he then proceeded to try and rape her.
After being hit by the defendant several times, S P told the court she managed to escape. But, when her cries for help went unanswered, she got back into the cab.
Emirati policeman MA, 24, testified that at 2am on the day of the incident he received a report about the assault. The officer then tracked down R A, who was found to be drunk.
He was not charged with consuming alcohol illegally.
“When we arrested him he said he was drunk and that what he did was wrong and that he was sorry,” said M A.
The defendant will be deported after completing his sentence.
