Dubai Appreciation Award to honour unheralded heroes

DUBAI // The chief of Dubai Police yesterday launched the Dubai Appreciation Award for community service.

The award followed a decree from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to honour people, private companies or institutions that demonstrate commitment to social responsibility.

Its winners will come from those who offer a valuable service to the Dubai community in social welfare, health, education and other fields, without regard to material profit or personal gain.

"This award recognises those who have served the community selflessly," said Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim, who will chair the board of trustees of the award.

"Even if they do not seek it, they deserve the thanks and acknowledgement this prize will give."

Gen Tamim added the award would have a positive effect on society, motivating people and organisations to give their best to the development of Dubai.

He also noted there were several small business initiatives that were worthy of praise and recognition through the award.

Gen Tamim said it was difficult to find worthy candidates because many gave to the community anonymously.

Members of the public will be able to assist by putting forward names, although the 10-member board of trustees will have the final say.
