DUBAI // An unemployed man who said he only assaulted a woman after she threw a bottle of vodka at him was jailed on Thursday for attempted rape.
Emirati A B, 37, had denied the charge relating to an incident at his flat involving A K, a female tourist from Kyrgyzstan, but he was sentenced to three months in jail at Dubai Criminal Court. Prosecutors successfully argued that he locked the woman in his home and tried to rape her before assaulting her because she refused to have sex with him.
A K said she met a male friend at a hotel before they went back to the Emirati defendant’s flat.
“We entered his home at 2am then my friend left the house and told me to wait for him. A B came out and told me to drink more alcohol before he attacked me,” said A K, whose age was not stated in records.
She said the Emirati was drunk and slapped her and pulled her to force her to drink.
“The alcohol fell on my face and hair then he forced himself on me and tried to rape me,” the woman said.
“He told me that I will be his wife for a week. Afterwards, he said he will kill me and hide my body.”
Her friend said the Emirati locked the front door, hid the keys and her mobile phone. However, she managed to find her phone and call police.
“We found her waving a stick through the bathroom window. She told us she had been assaulted and locked up inside,” said policeman F M.
Officers broke into the house and found the man drunk and the woman bleeding.
In court in June the Emirati denied charges of attempted rape, assault, issuing threats and holding A K against her will, though he admitted consuming alcohol.
He was found guilty of attempted rape and consuming alcohol and was sentenced to three months and fined Dh2,000. He was found not guilty of all other charges.
