DUBAI // More than five kilograms of cocaine and 350 grams of hashish have been seized from passengers at Dubai International Airport.

Col Mohammed Thani Hareb, director of Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department, said the first traveller was an African woman, A M, who had come from a South American country and was heading to Zambia in April.

“Officers noticed that she was walking heavily and seemed very nervous,” he said. “When female officers searched her, they found two pieces of cloth pressed against her body with secret pockets filled with [cocaine].”

In another case, an Asian man, M O S, attempted to smuggle 350 grams of hashish that he obtained from his home country.

“The man was a resident of Dubai and hid the drugs in the soles of his shoes,” said Col Hareb, adding that the incident took place on April 26.

Both suspects admitted to attempting to smuggle drugs and their cases have been transferred to prosecutors.
