DUBAI // A driver who tried to frame his two room-mates in a drug case was himself arrested and charged with drug consumption, a court heard on Tuesday.

Dubai Criminal Court was told that the 34-year-old Bangladeshi defendant called Riffa police station on September 19 last year and reported his room-mates for possessing and selling drugs.

“We arrested them at the apartment and found 12 grammes of marijuana, which the driver told us some of which was hidden in his room-mate’s pocket, and the rest was hidden in a candy box,” testified a policeman, 37.

He added that investigations revealed that the candy was still in its wrapper and the driver had opened it without his room-mate knowing and placed the drugs inside to frame him and another room-mate.

It was not revealed why he was trying to frame them.

However, he ended up arrested and referred to court on charges of lodging a false report, possessing marijuana used to frame his friends and with consuming the drug.

He only confessed to a charge of using drugs but denied the other two.

A verdict is expected on April 4.
