DUBAI // Divers have found a ship maintenance worker who was drowned in his car off a Jebel Ali dock early yesterday morning.
It is believed the car rolled into the water after Mohammed Rafiq, 49, a Bangladeshi driver, took a nap without putting on the handbrake.
Dubai police received a call at 3am from an Indian engineer reporting Mr Rafiq was missing.
The police statement from the maintenance engineer, 41, said he went with Mr Rafiq to Jebel Ali port on Saturday night to work on a ship at Dock Number 4.
After he finished working on the vessel he was unable to find the driver or the car.
Police arrived and searched the grounds and water. Divers found the car submerged off the edge of a dock with Mr Rafiq still inside.
"The man was found dead inside and cuts were seen on his elbows," a police source said.
The death was one of several incidents in Dubai waters in the past week, said Major Yahya Mohammed Yahya, the head of the marine rescue division at Dubai Police.
Major Yahya said the accidents were caused by people not following safe practices and waiting as long as two to five hours to report incidents.
"The majority were at night," he said. "People do not adhere by the guidelines presented to them that bar swimming after dark."
On Saturday morning, a man drowned off Al Mamzar Beach and two others were taken to hospital in critical conditions after drifting out to sea near the Burj Al Arab.
