ABU DHABI // The Ministry of Health has banned nine dietary supplements after health bodies in Canada and the US warned they could cause a sharp drop in blood pressure.

The Canadian Health Authority and the US Food and Drug Administration issued directives after finding the supplements were particularly hazardous to patients with heart disease or diabetes.

Al Ittihad, the sister newspaper of The National, reported the Ministry has ordered the products to be withdrawn from the market as they contain unregistered ingredients.

Dr Amin Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary, said the banned products contain vardenafil and sildenafil, which are also used in medicines to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

The products are sold under the brand names Male Silkworm Moth Nourishing Oral Liquid, Power 1 Tablets, Dr Ming’s Chinese Capsule, Santi Scalper, Maxman Cialis and Vim-25.

He added that the ministry maintains contact with the World Health Organisation and other health bodies to monitor any developments concerning pharmaceutical products.
