DUBAI // More than Dh26 million has been raised from a series of auctions of abandoned goods held by Dubai Customs in 2016.
Five auctions were held by Jebel Ali Customs Centres and organised in partnership with Dubai World.
The amount of money received was a huge increase on the Dh7m in sales from six auctions in 2015.
Two auctions were held at Port Rashid, resulting in Dh9m in sales, while three auctions took place in Jebel Ali where Dh17m was raised.
Yousef Al Hashmi, director of Jebel Ali Customs Centres management at Dubai Customs, said turnout for the auctions last year saw 1,450 bidders, a 33 per cent increase on 2015, when 1,091 took part.
A range of different items were sold including foodstuffs, furniture, used cars, new and used clothes, electrical appliances, steel pipes, coal, plywood, shoes, household items, spare parts, wood and carpets.
