ABU DHABI // Heroin worth Dh10 million has been seized by the Abu Dhabi Police.
Five traffickers from Asian and African countries have been arrested over the haul, which weighed 22 kilograms.
Five separate raids were carried out based on intelligence from officers in the capital.
The largest amount of heroin seized was in the UAE, when 17.5kg of heroin was found in wooden boxes in a warehouse. An African man was detained at the scene.
Four other stashes were recovered in Dubai, Muscat and Milan.
Abu Dhabi Police passed information to the Ministry of Interior’s federal anti-drug team, which coordinated the seizures.
Two men were arrested at Dubai Aiport after they were found to have swallowed heroin in capsules.
One of them had consumed 118 capsules weighing 1.05kg, while the other man took 104 capsules weighing 900 grams.
A man detained at Muscat Airport had swallowed 1.2kg of heroin in 234 capsules, while a man held at Milan’s airport was carrying 940g of the drug.
The market value of the 22kg is estimated at more than Dh1.5m and the retail sale price is roughly Dh10m.
