ABU DHABI // A man accused of shipping cocaine to the UAE said he committed the crime because he was depressed and wanted to be locked up in prison.

MA, Emirati, said he was facing troubles in his life when he flew to India, where he befriended a man who said he would help him in anyway he wanted.

“So when I returned to the UAE I suffered many psychological problems and I decided I want to do any crime that would put me in jail,” M A told the criminal court on Tuesday

So he asked his new friend in India to send him cocaine, which he agreed to do if he wired him Dh1,500 first.

As M A worked in an oil field on the UAE-Saudi Arabia border where there were no money transfer centres, he asked his friend A R, who is a co-defendant in the case, to transfer the money on his behalf.

So the supplier in India address the package to A R, so he was arrested when customs found the drugs.

MA said AR, also Emirati, was unaware of the nature of the deal.

A verdict will be announced on February 24.
