DUBAI // A driver for a children’s toys company was sentenced to six months in jail for stealing Dh70,000 worth of toys and selling them for half price, the Dubai Criminal Court ruled.
The thefts, which had been taking place since 2010, were only discovered in September last year. The defendant, D A, 26, from Pakistan, was arrested the same month.
A W, 35, from India, a partner in the toy company located in Al Qusais, testified that in 2010 DA was hired as a driver to deliver shipments of toys to shops across the country.
“He would present bills for each order delivered, but in September last year we carried out an inventory and discovered the missing items, then we found out that he had been stealing because he showed signs of sudden wealth,” said A W.
A W added that internal investigations revealed that the defendant had purchased a new car and when he was questioned about the missing toys he stalled and then disappeared.
“He stopped coming to work so we reported the incident to police and told them about our suspicions concerning D A, then it was discovered he was selling them to other shops for less prices and the police took the testimony of the owner of one of these shops who confirmed that D A sold him the toys,” added A W.
It was found that D A had taken the key to the warehouse without the knowledge of the guard, before making a copy of it and coming in late at night to steal toys.
He will be deported after completing his jail term.
