DUBAI // A Pakistani man has been sentenced to death for smuggling more than four kilograms of heroin into the country.

The criminal court heard that W A, 30, arrived at Sharjah International Airport on May 10 last year carrying the drugs.

Soon after, an informant tipped off police that he was trying to sell the heroin for Dh100,000 in Dubai.

Pakistani police corporal A A, 49, was assigned to go under cover to play the role of the buyer.

“After coordinating with the defendant, we agreed to meet in the Naif area at 6.30pm so I could pick up the drugs and give him the money,” he said.

“W A arrived then left me waiting for about half an hour before returning carrying a laptop bag, which turned out to contain the drugs. After the exchange was done, he was arrested.”

The defendant had 2kg on him and a further 2kg back in his hotel room.

Lt O A, 27, testified that the defendant confessed to smuggling the drugs by wrapping them around his legs using bandages.

“We found the bandages at his hotel room,” O A said.

The death-penalty verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.
