ABU DHABI // A woman who was raped by four men did not dare resist because they threatened to kill her, the criminal court heard today.

The woman said she met one of the men at the party of a mutual friend.

"He was polite with me and seemed very nice, I did not think he would be capable of such actions," she said.

When the party was over he offered to drop her home and she accepted. During the ride she heard the ring of a BlackBerry, which was neither hers nor the driver's, and she noticed another man hiding in the back seat. This man pulled her onto the back seat by her hair and put his hand over her mouth before taking her phone.

He then raped the woman while his friend continued to drive. The car stopped in an area of desert where the two men - both Emiratis - were joined by two others from Oman and Saudi Arabia. The four men then gang-raped the woman.

Afterwards they stole money and jewellery from her handbag, leaving her with only Dh50, before calling her a taxi and fleeing.

Chief Justice Sayed Abdul Baseer, the head of the criminal court, asked the woman why did she not try to scratch her rapists with her visibly long nails.

"They are all fake," she said, before taking them off one by one. She said she had hoped the ordeal would end after the first man raped her, adding that the men threatened to kill her if she resisted.

"I heard from a friend before that most rapists kill their victims in the end so they cannot be identified."

The case was adjourned until August 13.
