ABU DHABI // A citizen-run crime prevention programme would help drive criminals away from their neighbourhoods, residents believe.

Almost 6 in 10 (59 per cent) of those surveyed believe their community would benefit from a neighbourhood watch crime programme and slightly more than half (51 per cent) are interested in joining such a scheme in their area.

Neighbourhood watch is a crime prevention scheme where members agree to keep an eye out for one another and their properties, patrol the streets and report suspicious incidents to the police.

Often, members of a neighbourhood watch also educate residents of a community on security and safety and how to achieve safe and secure neighbourhoods.

“This is something quite interesting as it does not only raise awareness about security in communities, but encourages a sense of belonging amongst expats,” said Lara Al Barazi, associate research director of YouGov, which conducted the poll.

“Taking part in this initiative encourages residents to become more responsible and protective of their area of residence.”

The survey found women in particular would like such a programme in their residential area.

Of those asked, 61 per cent of female respondents believed their community would benefit from a neighbourhood watch programme while only 13 per cent said they did not believe it would deter criminals. A quarter (26 per cent) were unsure.

The 35 to 39-year-old age group, the highest income bracket, were the most keen to see such an initiative in their community.
