Two years in prison for car-smuggling operation

They forged documents to ship vehicles out of the country illegally, prosecutors say.

DUBAI // Two men will spend two years in jail for shipping a 2008 Nissan Patrol to Iraq after forging shipping documents, a court ruled this morning.

AM, 27, a sales representative and AN, 47, a manager, both Syrians, were arrested after investigations into a car-smuggling gang.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance ruled they forged an official document, used the forged document, and unlawfully obtained the Patrol last year. Both men denied all the charges.

KS, a 32-year-old police corporal said that after receiving a tip, investigators arrested AM in Sharjah and found 14 car keys in his possession. They also found six shipping letters, which were found to be forged.

AM confessed to working for a Syrian man, who is still in Syria, and who sends them the forged letters with friends visiting the UAE.

KS said this man was previously deported from the UAE for the same type of offence. Records said the man had an official stamp of the Roads and Transport Authority, but did not elaborate on how he obtained it.

Both men will be deported after serving their prison terms.
