Dubai // A man stole a million dirhams worth of gold and hid it in a Bani Yas graveyard.
RN, a 20-year-old from Kosovo, today admitted a charge of forceful robbery to the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance. He was charged with the crime along with two compatriots who have fled the country. "I did it, the others had nothing to do with it," he told the court.
Prosecutors said RN, OH and MH broke into a jewellery shop on July 17. The three smashed the display table with a hammer and stole gold valued at nearly one million dirhams.
Video footage examined by police showed the trio in action and allowed investigating officers to trace the barcode on the hammer they used.
The policeman HO said officers tracked down further footage showing two of the men purchasing the hammer.
Police tracked the men to a hotel where RN was arrested. The other two had already left the country. RN showed police the graveyard where he had hidden the jewellery following the robbery.
A fourth man, ET, a 43-year-old from Germany, was charged with possessing stolen items. A Pakistani salesman testified that he worked at ET's gold shop and that he was asked to liquefy and reshape the gold to ship it to Turkey.
The hearing was adjourned until March 11.
