DUBAI // A Sri Lankan accused of stabbing a man in the neck during a drunken argument avoided a murder charge yesterday, even though the victim died of complications from his injuries. SR, 22, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon because he had not intended to kill the victim, according to the prosecution. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. Prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court that SR and his brother SK, 21, had drunk alcohol and fought with the victim on May 23, 2008 at a shared villa in the Satwa district of Dubai.
Police said SR had told them he took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed TS in the neck. The weapon was found near the house. SK was charged with aiding and abetting a crime. The victim's wife told investigators her husband was trying to break up a fight, prosecutors said. She told police she saw SR and SK drinking and arguing on the night of the assault. When another person tried to intervene, she said, he was stabbed in the stomach by SR.
Her husband then interceded. "He stabbed my husband on the neck and ran out of the house," she told police. No charges were filed over the alleged first stabbing. The defendants protested their innocence but waived their right to a defence. The court is to announce its verdict next week. @Email:amustafa@thenational.ae

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
