ABU DHABI // A father awarded Dh10,000 in compensation after his son was forced to repeat a year at school has been awarded another Dh5,000.
The Civil Appeals Court ordered the extra payout on top of a settlement ruling by the First Instance Civil Court in June.
The boy had transferred from Egypt to a private school in Abu Dhabi and enrolled in grade 12.
But the boy was not allowed to sit midterm exams because Abu Dhabi Educational Council did not recognise the Egyptian curriculum. He was told he would have to retake grade 11.
The father filed a lawsuit against the school and the council citing financial and emotional damages. He said he spent Dh50,000 on private lessons.
The court ruled the school had been negligent in not informing the father that entry to exams was dependent on the council's approval, and for a delay in processing the son's documents.
But it said there should be no compensation for the private lessons because the father had chosen to pay for them.
