More than a tonne of drugs worth Dh25 million were seized in Ras Al Khaimah last year.

Col Ibrahim Al Tunaiji, director of police’s anti-narcotic department, said the 1.125 tonnes of drugs were seized with the help and co-ordination of “strategic partners” in other emirates.

He said officers had busted “several attempts” to smuggle drugs into the country.

One notable operation was when police arrested three drug dealers and confiscated about 763kg of opiates, Col Al Tunaiji said.

He said the drug smugglers tried to evade police by concealing their identities but were tracked down and arrested nonetheless.

He called on parents to warn their children against drug use and to explain the dangers of addiction to help protect them.

Last week, Dubai Police said they seized more than a tonne of drugs and arrested 1,044 suspects in the last three months of 2020 alone.

The anti-narcotics department confiscated 1.034 tonnes of illegal substances, including heroin, cocaine, crystal meth and marijuana.

This was more than half of all the drugs seized in the UAE over this period.
