DUBAI // A bank clerk accused of attempting to bribe two police officers has claimed that they assaulted him after his vehicle was stopped for illegally transporting alcohol. The 35-year-old Indian, A K, was arrested on February 22 after officers spotted him driving his 4x4 in a suspicious manner in Jebel Ali. They pulled him over and recovered 300 bottles of whiskey. A K, who is charged with bribery and illegal possession of alcohol, claimed that he was beaten with a wooden stick during the incident, while the arresting officers said he offered them a Dh50,000 (US$13,600) bribe and a Lexus car to let him go.
The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance heard that A K pushed an officer to the ground and tried to escape. He was subdued, according to the officer, and another policeman hit the defendant with a stick. A verdict is expected on May 18.

- Muslim Brotherhood at all levels has repeatedly defended Hamas attacks against Israel, including the use of suicide bombers and the killing of civilians.
- Laying out the report in the House of Commons, David Cameron told MPs: "The main findings of the review support the conclusion that membership of, association with, or influence by the Muslim Brotherhood should be considered as a possible indicator of extremism."

Uefa Nations League: How it works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.
Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.
