Two men who tried to smuggle heroin into Dubai, by hiding it in a wheelchair, will see out their 10-year jail sentences.
The Pakistani men, aged 31 and 40, landed in Dubai International Airport on March 26.
The younger man pushed the older accused in a wheelchair but customs inspectors suspected them and searched their belongings.
"I tasked an inspector to frisk the younger suspect and pass all his items, including his shoes, in the X-ray scanner," said an Emirati senior inspector.
The scan revealed irregularities in the shape of the shoes which was later revealed to be 500g of heroin.
The inspectors scanned the bag belonging to the wheelchair-user and found four plastic-wrapped parcels, containing drugs, stuffed in the corners.
The wheelchair was also scanned and its wheels were found to contain more drugs.
On drilling a hole into the iron bars, brown powder streamed out.
The men were arrested for attempting to smuggle more than 2kg of heroin into the country, and were referred to Dubai Police's anti-narcotics department.
In court last June, the pair claimed to not know the substance they were carrying was heroin.
Dubai Criminal Court sentenced them to 10 years in prison and to pay a fine of Dh50,000 each.
On Monday, the pair lost their bid for a reduced sentence at Dubai's Court of Appeals, meaning they must carry out their full sentence and pay the complete fine.
