DUBAI // Two men posed as police officers to kidnap and rob an electrician, a Dubai court heard today.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance was told that AA, 24, and AD, 30, both Pakistani, told the 25-year-old Bangladeshi electrician they were from the Criminal Investigation Department.

Both men face charges of impersonation, theft, and kidnapping. AD did not appear in court; AA denied the charges.

Prosecutors said that on April 19, they forced the victim to ride with them after seeing him standing next to a supermarket in Al Qouz. They asked for his ID, then took Dh10,800 before driving him away.

While in the car, they tied up the man and as they reached a dark area, they threw him out of the vehicle and assaulted him. They left him there and drove away, records show.

Prosecutors said AD and AA took the man's four mobile phones. AD was separately charged with using an official document belonging to others because he showed an ID issued by the Ministry of Interior that belonged to someone else.

SO, 36, a police sergeant, testified that officers received information that AA and AD were targeting workers and robbing them after claiming they were police officers.

He said one of the men would approach a victim, and shortly afterward the other would show up claiming he was a police officer.

The next hearing will be on September 25.
