DUBAI // Two men defied police demands for a urine sample by going to the toilet on the floor of their cells - only to find their actions provided the police with the sample they were seeking.
HG, 36, and HS, 41, both Emirati, were arrested after police noticed their Mercedes veering across lanes on the Sheikh Zayed Road near the World Trade Centre in the early hours of January 20 this year, heard the Criminal Court.
"It was moving from one lane to another in a very dangerous way," recalled the policeman SS, who said he and his colleague immediately suspected the driver was on drugs. "Two men were in the car and when one stepped out, some tablets fell from his pocket," he added.
The two Emiratis were arrested and taken to Bur Dubai Police station.
Prosecutors said both men refused to give urine samples and instead urinated on the floor of their solitary confinement cells in defiance. The urine on the floor was then used as a sample. They also said that the driver, when arrested, lied about his identity to the police.
The driver was charged with consuming drugs, driving under the influence of drugs and with impersonation. The other man was charged with drug possession and consumption.
Both men denied the charges and the case was adjourned to April 29.

Mark Chahwan, co-founder and chief executive of robo-advisory firm Sarwa, forecasts that Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2024) will start investing in their teenage years and therefore benefit from compound interest.
“Technology and education should be the main drivers to make this happen, whether it’s investing in a few clicks or their schools/parents stepping up their personal finance education skills,” he adds.
Mr Chahwan says younger generations have a higher capacity to take on risk, but for some their appetite can be more cautious because they are investing for the first time. “Schools still do not teach personal finance and stock market investing, so a lot of the learning journey can feel daunting and intimidating,” he says.
He advises millennials to not always start with an aggressive portfolio even if they can afford to take risks. “We always advise to work your way up to your risk capacity, that way you experience volatility and get used to it. Given the higher risk capacity for the younger generations, stocks are a favourite,” says Mr Chahwan.
Highlighting the role technology has played in encouraging millennials and Gen Z to invest, he says: “They were often excluded, but with lower account minimums ... a customer with $1,000 [Dh3,672] in their account has their money working for them just as hard as the portfolio of a high get-worth individual.”

Haemoglobin disorders explained
Thalassaemia is part of a family of genetic conditions affecting the blood known as haemoglobin disorders.
Haemoglobin is a substance in the red blood cells that carries oxygen and a lack of it triggers anemia, leaving patients very weak, short of breath and pale.
The most severe type of the condition is typically inherited when both parents are carriers. Those patients often require regular blood transfusions - about 450 of the UAE's 2,000 thalassaemia patients - though frequent transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body and heart and liver problems.
The condition mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, South-East Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Saudi Arabia recorded 45,892 cases of carriers between 2004 and 2014.
A World Health Organisation study estimated that globally there are at least 950,000 'new carrier couples' every year and annually there are 1.33 million at-risk pregnancies.
